Cumulative Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Forestry & Wood
Artificial intelligence is creating cumulative impact across the forestry & wood value chain by improving decision-making, operational efficiency, risk detection, and product quality. In forest management, AI models combined with satellite imagery, LiDAR, drones, climate datasets, and ground-based sensors can support forest inventory, biomass estimation, tree health assessment, species classification, harvest planning, wildfire risk mapping, and pest or disease detection. These tools enable more frequ

She discussed recent CBI discoveries, why the center is expanding into new plant feedstocks like pine and eucalyptus, and how automation and AI can accelerate the path from genetic insight to factory-ready plants. The use of AI and robotics is a cornerstone of the DOE Genesis Mission, a national initiative to build the world’s most powerful scientific platform to accelerate discovery science, strengthen national security, and drive ene

Bringing AI to the field: How UNaF students in Argentina tested Timbeter on native quebracho logs
January 26, 2026
What happens when future forestry engineers meet artificial intelligence in the middle of a log yard? At the Universidad Nacional de Formosa (UNaF) in Argentina, the answer was a hands-on academic project that brought Timbeter into real field conditions for the first time in their forestry program. The goal was clear: evaluate how well an AI-powered measurement tool performs on native species—specifically quebracho colorado (Schinopsis balansae)—and compare it to

The technology integrates high-resolution Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), LiDAR, inertial sensors (IMU), and AI-based obstacle detection, building on proven control technology developed by project partners. This geospatial backbone will enable not only robotic weed control, but also future applications such as inventory assessment, fire management, and forest monitoring.
